Dear Mum and Dad
I think you should come to Dunedin Hospital since I think you don't understand my situation fully. I am being kept against my will and have been forced to accept medication. I'm sure we can resolve any differences we have had in the past so could you do your utmost to help me get out of this situation. 11th letter... Tessa |

Tessa sent us the above letter on January 10, 1996, 15 days after she was admitted to Dunedin Hospital and about a week after she received her first depot injection of flupenthixol — an "old-generation" antipsychotic. It already reveals changes in her thinking. Although she still wants to get out of hospital, she no longer talks about her "heart condition". And she expresses a desire for a reconciliation with us — something she would not have done more than a few days earlier.
