Tessa sent us the above letter in September 1995, about four months before she was admitted to the psychiatric ward of a public hospital and diagnosed as suffering from schizophrenia. She wanted my birth certificate to establish her right to reside in the
United Kingdom — and thus to be able to fly there without a return ticket. Needless to
say, I refused to give it to her.
